What is your teaching philosophy?
Sharing real world application is one way. Making music or art out of something that comes off dry is another way. Showing how the subject has helped someone the student can relate to is a third way.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
The first thing I strive to do is to find common ground between us and to find the limits of your comfort zone.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By being encouraging and highlighting small successes that indicate growth. I can gradually become like training wheels that come off a bicycle.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By acknowledging where improvement is shown in spite of mistakes, and while reassuring you that even those mistakes add up to success, we would keep you up and excited about your gains.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
One of the best ways to improve reading comprehension is to find or make a simple comparison that parallels the idea in writing, usually something individually personal and compelling.
