What is your teaching philosophy?
With over 20 years teaching experience in three different countries, including Pakistan, United States, and Canada, I have come to believe even more so that education is the key to improving global relations, as well as create a mutually respectful environment all around.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Introduce self, get to know students, as well as get a clear picture of the student needs and their current workload.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Gradually build their confidence in self by assigning smaller tasks initially and helping guide them to succeed on a daily base.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Through appraisal, encouragement, and self-evaluation, which in turn would help in boosting one's self-confidence and motivation. Also, by doing some quick fun activities from time to time, depending on the activity at hand.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Read daily with them according to their comfort initially, and then more challenging as they improve. Encourage own reading from public library and/or online reading sites, as well as books on topics that would interest them.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Building a good working relationship, mutual respect, focus on the task at hand, having a good laugh here and there, and stopping to teach anything new when you can sense nothing will work on a given day. Instead, try to review on such days to improve previous understanding of concepts.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Depending on the student's age and interest(s), try to incorporate and add that into own teaching. Individualize student's teaching style.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Teach first, repeat, ask the student to review what they learned, and answer any questions/concerns they might have.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Working together, guiding the way from simple through complex assignments while encouraging constantly and showing patience.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I have mostly taught in a classroom setting and mostly go with the flow, deciding things based on the subject matter, as well as the needs of the students.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
By their own evaluation of their growth and improvement, as well as the confidence with respect to the subject matter being studied.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By making it easier or more challenging for the student as the case and need may be!
