Education is a passion for me. I've loved it ever since I was a child and love it now that I am able to share my knowledge with others. I received my BA in Biochemistry at Vassar College, my MSC in Anatomy & Physiology at the Atlantic Veterinary College of UPEI, and my PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Orthopedics) at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Subjects revolving around biology and chemistry are therefore my area of expertise and what I most enjoy tutoring.
I don't have a singular approach to tutoring. It starts with getting to know the student and how they best assimilate information. Everyone is different. I always look to the individual's needs and work from there.
Outside of academia I am interested in Fitness (CrossFit, Powerlifting), Aikido, Rock Climbing, Gaming, Movies, and Outdoor Activities/Nature.

What is your teaching philosophy?
In a broad sense, I see the role of a teacher as a guide, or someone who can bring clarity and perspective to an individual and develop their capacity to be initiators of their own learning. Looking back, I find that, as a student, I responded best to teachers that demonstrated a joy or passion for their discipline and to teachers that took an active role in enabling me, as an individual, to succeed.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I ask them about what they enjoy and what they are passionate about in life. It doesn't matter if it's a subject, a sport, a hobby, etc. It's important to start on a positive note and emphasize what motivates us.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I focus on fundamentals, patterns, and methods for thinking through and solving problems. An emphasis on this approach will impart the resources necessary to meet and solve new problems in the future.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I'd bring the focus back to what they enjoy in life and what they are passionate about. I remind them that every step of the way, no matter how seemingly unimportant, will aid them down the road.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I'd relate the skill or concept to something they do understand. I'd utilize different and varied forms of explanation (e.g. video, physical models, etc.).
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I teach students the structure of different types of reading material. I discuss the meaning of words. I teach note-taking skills and summarizing strategies.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I summarize the areas they have trouble with. I have the student describe how the difficulties appear to them. I determine the approaches to learning that work best for them (listening, reading, visualizing, etc.).
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I find out what they are interested in and/or what they want to do with their life and make connections. Alternately, I create life situations or games that make the learning process more fun/accessible.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I create a similar problem/case/situation that requires the same thought process, but uses different variables.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I highlight or emphasize the areas of the topics that the student does understand. There will always be aspects of every subject that a student does understand. These just need to be reinforced and built upon.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I ask them what they feel they need. I speak to their parents as well. Then, I examine past graded homework and test results to assess patterns of learning deficiency.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I determine the way they best process and integrate information. This can start with a discussion, but may also require experimenting with different approaches (visual, tactile, etc.).
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Diagrams, videos, models, and outlines.
