Certified Tutor
I earned a B.S. in secondary education with a focus in chemistry at The Pennsylvania State University, and am currently working towards my Masters of Divinity degree in St. Louis, MO.
I have 6 years teaching experience at the Stony Brook School, a private college preparatory boarding school on Long Island. While working there, I taught 'Honors Chemistry,' 'Chemistry,' 'Biology,' and '7th Grade Life Science.' My favorite subject to tutor is chemistry, because learning to see the world like a chemist opens our eyes to the wonder of things that happen around us and in us everyday. The challenge students meet in chemistry is a great opportunity that can promote perseverance, abstract thinking, and creative problem-solving skills, and that is exciting!
I am currently available to tutor courses in Chemistry and Life Science. My tutoring style challenges students to develop a solid conceptual understanding so they are able to solve a variety of related questions. I tend to discourage shortcuts or simplifications and ask students questions about background material and related concepts to aid in their understanding of the current topic.
I believe that learning is hard work, but that it should be enjoyable and rewarding. Making mistakes is part of the process, so I encourage students to take risks and not be afraid of asking questions or getting wrong answers along the way. That's all part of the process. I love seeing students grow in their confidence and ability as they master their coursework.

Outside of teaching, I enjoy music; playing guitar and songwriting. I love watching and playing basketball, watching football, and reading (mostly theology these days). To relax I draw and play video games, and wish I had more time to do all the things I love. I have also thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2005 and bicycled across the United States in 2008.
