What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that children matter. Providing a healthy learning environment is crucial to ensuring students gain optimal growth.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would introduce myself and give a few details about my personal life to make the student feel comfortable. I would also ask the student questions about their likes, dislikes, and interest/hobbies to learn more about them as individuals and to establish a connection.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can give the student small tasks to complete on his/her own to help a student learn to work independently.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By using encouraging words and offering positive reinforcement, I will help my student remain focused and on task.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will break down the steps to help a student understand a difficult concept. I can also work side by side with the student to ensure he/she understand the skills presented to them.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would help students with reading comprehension by finding relatable, day-to-day connections to establish an understanding between the reading material and themselves.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Establishing a connection is important because I allow for connections to form between myself and my students. Also, using positive reinforcement encourages the student to continue to be motivated and stay relatively on task.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By working through difficult subjects hand in hand, I can increase motivation and interest within the student to allow for a clearer and higher understanding. Also, searching for multiple ways to ensure understanding in not-so-easy tasks will motivate students to enhance their learning, whereas the traditional paper and pencil methods can often be tedious or boring for some students.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Some techniques that I would use to ensure the student understands the material would be using demonstrative resources such as quizzes, projects, and in-depth conversations/sessions together.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Practice is a great way to ensure a student gains confidence in a given subject. Repetition and continued practice will strengthen a student's confidence and ability to retain information on a difficult subject.
