Nelson: Laguna Niguel tutor

Certified Tutor

I recently graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a degree in Biology. I aspire to become a dentist one day and I am currently working towards that goal. I am capable of tutoring students in the subject of math (up to Algebra 2) and Biology. I have a year of experience tutoring an ESL student with a learning disability. I have 2 additional years of tutoring experience tutoring my classmates in courses pertaining to Biology. The subjects within Biology that I enjoy the most are human anatomy and physiology, cellular and molecular biology, cellular physiology, as well as ecology. I work well with individuals as well as group settings. Outside of school, I like to explore new places. Some of the hobbies that I partake in include volleyball (occasionally), cooking, and jogging. During my undergraduate studies, I was part of the Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honors Society and part of the Pre-Dental club. I am a motivated and goal-oriented individual who is eager to learn and teach. I will utilize different methods of teaching to help a huge variety of students with different learning styles.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe everyone is capable of succeeding; some might be naturally talented in a subject while others may require some guidance. I believe, with the proper guidance, anyone can master any subject.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will first establish the level at which the student is at with the subject through an assessment test that I created. Then I will create a thorough lesson plan that not only revolves around the student's school curriculum but also provide additional information and assignments that will help this individual student succeed in the class.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will help a student become an independent learner by motivating the student to spend more time reading outside of class. Through additional reading, the student can potentially discover a particular interest in which he or she can further develop on his or her own. Initially, most of the teaching will be done by me. Later, as time progresses, the student will be required to explain concepts to me and 'teach' me. If a student is capable of teaching a subject back to the instructor, the student has truly understood the concept.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I would start over from the basics and slowly ease into the more complicated concepts. I will provide additional practice material to make sure the student has truly mastered the concepts before moving on.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I first access the level of understanding the student has on the subject matter. Then I provide worksheets for the student to practice. If I feel that the student is not at an acceptable level to move on to the next subject, I will review major concepts with the student until he or she is ready to move on. If a student has trouble grasping a concept, and if possible, I will enhance the learning experience by including diagrams and or illustrations that can help the student better understand the concept.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs through self-made exams. I will also require the students to explain specific concepts to me to ensure that the student has understood what was taught to him or her.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The materials that I typically use are PowerPoints, additional worksheets, practice questions, and practice exams.
