What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe each and every student has a preferred learning method, and it is my goal to hone in on these learning styles to provide the most supportive learning environment.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student I will introduce myself, ask about my student's likes and dislikes, reasons for wanting a tutor, and some general introductory questions. We will then come up with a tailored teaching plan and begin our scheduled lessons.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will provide homework and opportunities for the student to teach me what he/she has learned in our prior lessons. This provides the student with a means to master the subject, while also reinforcing the fact that through practice he/she can be an independent learner.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

My students often enjoy games, learning objective goal charts, and supportive talks to keep up their motivation. Additionally, all my students will have a weekly check in during one of their sessions to help ensure they are still motivated and on track to meet their goals.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I usually break it down into smaller parts, use teaching aids, play games, create images, or use metaphors to teach the skill.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

We will often break down the comprehension tasks into small parts, read out loud together, have the student read to me or my certified therapy dog for a supportive audience, and/or search for a subject that the student is interested in learning about to read.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find I have the most success working with students when we create a plan to reach their goal, and I tailor my teaching style to meet their needs.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

My students have often found games, songs, and creating art a fun way to learn and master their subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I work at a pace, and through a teaching method that my students find beneficial and always have weekly check-ins to make sure we are meeting our goals.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Through repetition, games, homework, and teaching to their strengths.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Through open communication and regularly scheduled homework and quizzes.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Through open communication and weekly check in sessions.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Textbooks, workbooks, computer, calculator, pen, pencil, paper, art supplies, stickers, etc.
