Introduce myself and get a gauge of students' learning style.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Give them practice and provide them with opportunities to perform on level skills.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Positive words of encouragement. Goal setting.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Start with foundational skills and build the student up.
What is your teaching philosophy?
To help all students practice the skills they need to be successful in ALL subject areas.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I assess them then build up their foundational skills and gradually increase rigor on specific skills.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
A strategy that is very successful when beginning tutoring is getting to know the students and their interests.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would relate academic work to real life experiences.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would ask questions and ask for students to explain material to me. This would give me a good idea of my students understanding.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Motivational and positive words of affirmation.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Give them examples and actual content material and evaluate how they are responding and answering.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I use different ways to adapt to tutoring by providing students with opportunities to be better.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Books, pencils, crayons, markers, content related worksheets, and a computer.
