Certified Tutor

I am an enthusiastic tutor. As a native speaker, I provide French tutoring for students and adults. I incorporate news, songs, and other topics of interest from France to personalize and spice up the learning experience.

As a customer service manager for eight years, I conducted weekly one-on-one training sessions and workshops for groups of 10 to 25 people. These learning experiences addressed multiple topics and required me to develop pedagogical methods and to use simple language adapted to a multi-disciplinary audience. As a result, I developed the qualities necessary to help others learn: patience, active listening and creating a positive environment. I am happy to put these skills to good use in personalized tutoring sessions for Varsity Tutors customers. Since moving to Washington DC, I have tutored many peers and acquaintances in French language proficiency. I really enjoyed the experience and felt gratified that I was helping someone.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would slow down the pace of the lesson and first ask the student what they understood about from the lesson. Depending on their answer, I would either explain in a different way or start over step by step. I would ask a lot of questions to be sure that they understand. Then I would ask the student to explain the concept in their own words.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I think it's important to give the student a sense of control. For instance, I could allow them to choose the type of assignment they would do regarding the subject they find difficult. Moreover, I would set realistic goals and give encouragement when they reach them.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I'm a "digital guy," so during a tutoring session, I like to use a tablet or a laptop to access content from the internet (articles, songs, news, videos, etc.). I'm also comfortable with a pen and a white sheet, depending on the student's preference.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I really value the importance of customizing the lessons I give to my students. Being a good listener and a facilitator are two fundamental principles of my teaching style.
