I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

I love working with kids and I really enjoy helping someone to understand something in a new manner. I think that learning some of the subjects can be boring but I know how to liven the material up in a manner that is relatable/ easier to understand. I have been a camp counselor in the past so I have some experience working with kids; I am very patient and I was always someone in school that could turn a long tedious problem/ information into something that I remembered forever.

What is your teaching philosophy?

To play to each person's strengths. If you are a visual learner, I can turn everything into an image. If you need to be entertained while learning, I will create a game. Every student has a preference whether they know it or not.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session, I would get an understanding of the baseline of knowledge the student is currently at. I would try to assess the strength and weakness, then get to know the student better, figuring out their interests so I could relate the material to their personal interests.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Everything can be looked at from a different perspective, so if I can get a student to develop a sense of control to their studying/learning, then I believe they would become an independent learner. Students need motivation and excitement, which can be taught!

How would you help a student stay motivated?

You always need to set standards/goals, and when you reach that goal, you get a reward-- this could mean a little break, a snack, playing a quick fun game, etc.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find that getting to know someone is the best way to figure out their strengths and weaknesses and how they learn. If someone is very competitive then they need to learn through games whereas someone who needs to learn through visual displays will need pictures to comprehend the problem.
