Certified Tutor

Hi, I am a Biomedical Science major who will be starting NYU College of Dental Medicine in the fall. I first started tutoring in college and have continued to do so. My favorite subjects to tutor are Biology and Math. I enjoy tutoring because I am able to share my knowledge with students to help them succeed. Also, students help me along the way to become a better tutor.

Other than being a tutor, I like to read and exercise in my spare time. I also love cooking and baking; I am a frequent views of the Food Network. I also like going to the beach in the summer and spending time with my family and friends.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to learn the best way a student learns, and adapt to their needs by making the material relatable.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In the first session, I would like to gauge what the student knows. I may ask them what they have difficulty in and then quiz them with some practice questions.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by showing them study strategies that cater to the way they learn best.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I can help a student stay motivated by showing them how much they improved and keeping the topics they are struggling with interesting.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would readdress the concept differently from the first time I explained it. I may also use examples of the student's interests to make the concept relatable.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The most successful strategies include providing visuals and working through problems and concepts with the student, instead of just explaining the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I encourage a student to ask questions, and when they get something right, provide recognition.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring by understanding the student's learning style. For example, do they learn better with visuals or by vocalization?

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I help students struggling with reading comprehension by teaching them to identify key words that they need to answer the questions.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help a student get excited/engaged by presenting the material in an exciting and relatable manner.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would ask the student to explain the concept to me, explain how he/she got to his/her answer, or teach me how to work through a problem.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by seeing what they are confident about, which then shows me what they are not confident about. I also ask the student what they feel they are struggling with, and then have them do examples of that concept so I can determine what exactly they do not understand about the concept.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I usually use a white board or piece of paper to draw or write out concepts, flashcards, and PowerPoint visuals.
