Ziyue

Certified Tutor

I am currently a student at Swarthmore College(one of the elitist liberal arts college in the US). I anticipate to major in Biology with a special major in Architecture. My passion for these two distinct fields allow me to have multifaceted career options, spanning architectural school, biology research or academia.
I had been tutoring Chinese, writing and math for two years, and I am continuing to teach Mandarin and Cantonese on college campus. I was born in Guangdong, China, and I moved to the states when I was in middle school, thus allowing me to be completely fluent in all three languages. I value my culture a lot, and even until today, I still maintain the habit of reading at least one book in Chinese every 2 weeks.
I love personalized tutoring, so I have a very efficient system of targeting my course plans according to each individual student. I would incorporate connections to the your interests, teach to the your strengths, and make learning a really fun experience! Learning language can seem like a long task, but I like to set goals and use weekly agenda to improve your general study skills over a short amount of time! I also assign movies and fun videos to watch in Chinese. It is the most spoken language in the world, therefore, having this extra skill is extremely rewarding.
In my free time, I enjoy marine studies, cats, mock trial, musicals (Hamilton!), running, hiking, dragon boating, and all the beauties in life :)

What is your teaching philosophy?

1) Successful tutors build strong, personal relationships with their students. 2) Successful tutors listen and communicate early and often with parents and teachers. 3) Successful tutors have specific content expertise.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will do an introduction, icebreaker, history and importance of the specific language I am teaching, and I will ask the student to practice using the four Mandarin tones. Mandarin Chinese is a tonal language, which means that different tones can change the meaning of a word, even if the pronunciation and spelling are otherwise the same. It is essential to learn the different tones if you wish to speak Mandarin Chinese correctly.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Focus on goal setting, creating benchmarks and planning backwards; co-create individualized learning plans with their students.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will truly personalize the learning and incorporate connections to the student's interests. I will teach to the student's strengths and minimize the student's weaknesses.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will engage students more fully if they can turn school assignments into project-based activities and provide opportunities for real, hands-on work instead of abstract assignments or rote worksheets.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I will make learning relevant to students' interests create more students who actually care about what they are learning.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I will be flexible. This means being willing to adjust techniques and approaches to meet the learning styles of the student. I will also be patient. What is obvious or easy for you may not be so for your student. I will not show annoyance in my speech or body language.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I will be willing to share my own experiences. By sharing information about what I have encountered, the student may feel relieved that he or she is not alone. Sharing experiences and lessons learned goes a long way toward building trust and support. It also helps the student build self-confidence.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I will teach the student how to learn. As a tutor my ultimate goal is to help the student become an independent learner.
