I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

If you are looking for a native speaker, you found it! I am from France and I studied law both in France and in the US. I have a French and an American Master's Degree in Law and I am an attorney here. I have tutored students in both France and in the States. I have helped students with their school work (different levels from elementary to high school), I have helped children and adults improve their French language skills, and I have also had French conversational and cultural sessions. I understand how hard and challenging it can be to learn a new language (I myself worked with English and Spanish tutors for many years), so I will use my own experience and give you my personal tips to help you learn French!

What is your teaching philosophy?

A good teacher knows and understands students. A good teacher also understands the motivation of her student. A good teacher must know her subjects and how to help students learn those subjects.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student, to understand the expectation of the student, what he/she likes, and what the best approach to teach would be. Also it's important to understand how much the student can concentrate and how to keep her/his attention. Discuss this with the parents of course.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

One of the keys to learning a foreign language is to be interested in the culture of the language. I will try my best to make the student interested in the French culture by discussing French movies, songs, books, actuality, French cuisine... so that even when I am not here the student will practice French.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Always focus on the improvements!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Give multiple examples, use different types of tools, and come back to it another time if necessary. I am a strong believer that there is always a way!

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading comprehension can be challenging even in your own language. Patience is the key, encouraging the student to read.
