I am a senior at the Macaulay Honors College at Queens College. In May of 2016 I will be receiving a degree in Anthropology and Arabic. Since high school I have been passionate about tutoring in subjects ranging from English as a Second Language to Hebrew. Three years ago I began volunteering as an ESL instructor for adults and as an SAT preparation tutor for high school students from underserved communities. I currently teach Hebrew and tutor students for the Critical Reading and Writing sections of the SAT. I am passionate about helping students achieve their academic and intellectual goals.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I strongly believe that any student can learn and appreciate any skill or subject matter. It may take time, but I believe the result is always worth the effort!
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In my initial sessions with students I try to assess their overall academic strengths and challenges while compiling a list of the student's, parents', and teacher's goals for the student's progress.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Developing strong analytical skills while simultaneously cultivating a passion for learning is essential to developing independent learners.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I help students sustain their motivation by working with them to write a sequenced list of their short-term goals and a short list of their long-term goals. Consistent smaller accomplishments help students stay on track and motivated to achieve their long-term academic and intellectual goals.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
When a student has difficulty with a specific skill or concept, my first step is to help the student express, in their own words, what they feel they are challenged by. Then, using this answer, I work with the student to develop an action plan for tackling their challenge.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
The ability to understand and analyze language at every level (i.e. within a sentence, paragraph, or paper) is essential to strong reading comprehension skills. My first step is to determine at which level students are having trouble, and then break down the rules and writing styles that operate at that level.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Consistent, constructive, qualitative feedback is essential to keeping students happy and learning. Therefore, when working with a student, my primary strategy is to consistently assess and openly discuss that student's progress and next steps.
