What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is based on active learning, and I strive to help students develop evidence-based clinical problem-solving strategies (while having a little fun).

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to gauge where the student is at with the material and, most importantly, how the student learns best. I like to adapt my teaching styles to the individual needs of the student.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will guide them through the problem solving strategies I utilize for my own education.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I like to help students stay motivated by switching up my teaching styles and relating the material to things the student actually enjoys.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Depending on the student's level of frustration and difficulties they are having, I would take it back to the basics and see where the student got lost along the way. I would try to reteach certain concepts in more effective ways than the student was utilizing previously. I also really like to incorporate everyday things into the learning concepts to make it easier for the students to understand and retain the knowledge.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I feel that trying to relate to the student by sharing my own experience with difficult subject matter allows me to establish common ground.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I like to take notes, draw pictures, act things out and relate difficult concepts to everyday life.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I like to have students teach the material back to me. I find that once you can teach a subject you can master it.
