Personal satisfaction is always received when a student makes progress, regardless of the student's background. So for me, learning and transferring my learning to others have always been an enriching process that goes beyond the effort and the paycheck. I received a bachelor's degree in business and a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Boston University. At BU, I tutored calculus to Boston public school students for a summer prep program before they saw it in the class room later in the fall. A few years before that, I worked as an editor for a Chinese newspaper in Beijing for teaching students English. I had fun that summer seeing the 2008 Summer Olympics and the opportunity to be the go-to source for grammatical help within the department. After leaving BU, I joined New York City Teaching Fellows because I wanted to be a public school teacher. I received excellent training with a lot of role-playing and quick feedback from NYCTF, while also being enrolled in the Relay Graduate School of Education. My experience allowed me to teach Integrated Algebra I for summer school in the Bronx, and middle school math and science in Washington Heights.
Because of my diverse experience, I am comfortable tutoring a wide array of subjects: from economics to the sciences. My favorite subjects to tutor are ones with a humanistic aspect, such as history and biology, however, I am just as comfortable tutoring verbal skills, math, and physics. I'm lucky to say that tutoring fits into my overall life philosophy. Everything I do is about personal development, and when I help people learn, I also become more knowledgeable and better at communication. Other interests of mine include reading, sports, music, and nature; and I am always happy to use simply analogies from my interests to help facilitate learning!

What is your teaching philosophy?
Break things down into simple and easy to understand parts, and then give the parts meaning.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Look at a student's prior exam scores or test prep work.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Help them identity the general tools necessary for learning success that can be applied across all educational disciplines.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Help them see the future payoff of learning, especially using personal stories from myself and people I know.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Understand what the student is interested in and see if I can relate the skill or concept with the student's interest.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Have students break down the reading passage into easy to digest parts, and examine the elements of the parts individually first, and then in relation to the passage around the elements second.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Making the subject relatable to the student and communicating it as simple as possible without losing rigor
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Allow them to see how simple the subject can be if one just sees past the complexity and allows oneself to make it relatable.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Checking for understanding is important, using questioning that are similar but not identical to the question and answer the student saw before.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Allow the student to make incremental progress in a subject by giving them manageable learning objectives, and then giving the student positive affirmation once they meet these objectives.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Ask the student what he/she wishes to attain, and then find out what he/she is struggling with.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Put myself in the shoes of the student by relating with the student's needs -- oftentimes remembering a past experience with a former student is very helpful.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Usually fundamental materials such as chart paper, graph paper, different colored markers, a calculator, and a computer are all that's necessary
