Yasmeen: Lower East Side tutor
Certified Tutor
We think and learn differently; we are unique in our struggles and in our strengths. As an educator, I believe that my job is not to provide answers, but rather to provide the necessary tools for my students to critically think and solve problems independently. As a tutor, I adapt my lesson plans to the student's individual needs and encourage active communication and questions. I believe that a transformative and motivating learning environment is integral for the ability of a student to grow and succeed.
I graduated from University of California, San Diego in Summer of 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Ethnic Studies. In the fall, I plan on attending New York University for a master's program in Near Eastern Studies, with a long term goal of pursuing a PhD in History. I have taught Arabic at several independent schools in San Diego and have tutored non-Arabic-speaking students in Arabic conversation and writing. My volunteering experience includes teaching Syrian refugees English conversation and writing. I have also held one-on-one essay-writing workshops for high school students and have tutored elementary and middle school-aged students in reading and writing. I enjoy all subjects, but I am particularly passionate about Arabic, History, English, and Literature, including Writing and Grammar.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Typically, I would get to know them as a person, understand their comfort levels and their personal goals, and assess them academically to further understand their strengths and weaknesses with any given topic.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I help students who are struggling with reading comprehension by taking the given piece section-by-section, or if needed, sentence-by-sentence, in order to help strengthen their comprehension and allow them to understand the information without being overwhelmed.
