I have been taking upper-level math and science classes at the University of North Florida for some time. I have about 33 credits remaining for a bachelor's degree with a concentration in general physics and a minor in mathematics. I hope to simplify matters that might seem complicated. Many times complex concepts are best mastered in a step-by-step fashion. This approach demands patience, however, it usually ends in a cumulative understanding of these principal concepts.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Through cumulative effort, practice, & patience any subject can be summarized simply.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Ask what the subject topics they feel most confident with are, as well as which topics they are having trouble grasping. Many times there are ways to connect them & bring the concepts together into a full circle of understanding.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By establishing a step-based technique for understanding subject matter. An example would be this 4-step process: 1. Understanding (going over the steps needed to do a certain problem type). 2. Applying (doing these steps even if guided by a study guide or tutor at first). 3. Practice (repetition makes perfect)! 4. Trial-run (testing/challenging oneself with minimal help in a test-like scenario.)

How would you help a student stay motivated?

If a student grows frustrated, first one needs to find that root of that feeling. Say it is because they feel they can't grasp a certain concept, then the best route would be reminding them of a similar situation that they overcame in the past & assuring them that this is no different!
