What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Try to gauge where he/she is as far as getting the material, which aspects he/she has gotten down, and which ones he/she needs work on.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Show him/her how to do a few problems, then allow him/her to solve a few problems on his/her own, and then help correct any mistakes as needed.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Show the student how to do the concept a few times and try to address common issues that may cause confusion with said concept. After that, allow the student to try the concept on his/her own and see if he/she now understands the concept.
