Angela

Certified Tutor

I am an experienced tutor with 10+ years of experience. I graduated from the University of Virginia with a BA in Sociology. After graduating, I worked in my company's Finance Department for 9 years. While there, I went back to school twice receiving my MBA in Finance and my MPH in Health Promotion and Education, which is truly my passion. I am currently applying to a DrPH program in Health Behavior.

Throughout high school, college and upon graduation, I have provided math tutoring services for fellow classmates, friends and members of my church, including K-12 students, college students and adult learners. Tutoring is incredibly rewarding for me and I like to help my students improve their grades and confidence.

Many people have a negative experience with math at an early age and get turned off by even the thought of the subject. With patience and consistent reinforcement, I guide students through math concepts and create a firm foundation from which they can build upon in the future. I am here for you and I know you can and will be successful if you give it your all and remain positive! With a positive attitude, perseverance and perfect practice, an incredible learning experience is possible! Remember, perfect practice makes perfect!

In my spare time, I love to sing (I am apart of my church choir), dance (Latin dancing), read about public health issues and create issues for some of the problems in underprivileged populations, travel, volunteer, watch action movies, bowl and create skits.

What is your teaching philosophy?

With a positive attitude, perseverance and perfect practice, an incredible learning experience is possible! Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First, I would listen to their needs to ensure that I understand the problem(s) they are having. Next, I would let them know that they must have a positive attitude in order for future sessions to be successful. I would let them know that they might not get it the first time around, but with practice on their part and patience on my part, we will work through their troubles. I would also give them worksheets to complete on a daily basis to reinforce what we have covered, and provide them with interactive websites where they can get more practice.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Consistent encouragement is vital. Even if the student did not get the entire problem correct, I would be sure to highlight what they did correct first. Then I would guide them in the areas where they made mistakes. Knowing that they did something right helps to boost their confidence and keeps them motivated, rather than focusing only on what they did wrong.
