I am passionate about Biology and helping others learn! I am a graduate from Lake Erie College, with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. I excelled in the science program there and tutored Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Organic Chemistry, and Zoology during my Junior and Senior years. I have worked in Laboratory settings since graduation and have real world applicable knowledge of Biology. I LOVE teaching and cannot wait to help others learn and excel in their science classes and beyond!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Evaluate the student's knowledge of the subject, including their strengths as well as weaknesses. And try to evaluate their learning style.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By keeping them motivated in the subject. This is done by keeping the sessions positive and focused on moving forward in the material.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Break it down the most basic building blocks, and then show the student how they tie together.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Focusing on how the student learns, versus how the materials is usually taught, and rewarding every step forward.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
By keeping the material engaging, and by keeping the sessions positive and focused forward.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Asking them to explain the lesson back to me. And having them answer situational questions about the material.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
By rewarding correct answers, thinking, and reasoning, heading down the correct path.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
By learning their strengths and weaknesses and evaluating how they learn, and how much they currently understand of the material.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By figuring out how they learn, and tailoring each session to the individual student.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I try to work primarily from the student's book, lecture notes, handouts, and previous tests when available.
What is your teaching philosophy?
That everyone can learn; it's just a matter of finding out how they learn.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By keeping them thinking positively about the material and the subject.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
By breaking down the material into its basic building blocks, and assisting the student with definitions.
