I am a recent college graduate who earned her B.S. in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Edinboro University. I am interested in providing educational assistance to students who struggle with literacy in the classroom. I am willing to provide both face-to-face and online services for students in grades K-12. In addition to my educational background in Speech Therapy, I have experience working as an Assistant Teacher, Tutor, and Peer Advisor. I also completed an internship in Audiology and am interested in providing services to students with hearing loss who struggle with literacy in the classroom as well. In January 2016, I will start taking online classes to earn my graduate certification in Online Teaching and Learning. My approach to teaching students is tailored and individualized to meet the differences and abilities of my clients. I will work with both students and families to help children and adolescents succeed in the classroom. I look forward to working with you all. Thanks for choosing me!

What is your teaching philosophy?
To tailor each lesson and assignment to suit the needs of each individual's learning style.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Play a "get to know you" game so I can get to know my client and their families. This will allow me to get an idea of my client's interests and what I can incorporate into each activity/session to keep things fun and engaging.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By allowing the student to take the lead role in sessions/activities, and guiding them without doing the thinking and learning for them.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By incorporating their interests into each activity/session, and individualizing each activity to suit their specific learning styles.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Take some time out of the session to create practice problems, activities, or assignments related to the specific skill that the student is having difficulty with to facilitate the student's learning and understanding of the skill.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
By creating activities to enhance the student's sequencing skills, memory, and vocabulary knowledge.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Creating a learning environment that is suitable for their grade level and interests -- one that is developmentally appropriate, and one that challenges their abilities and enhances their skills.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Relate course materials/assignments to their personal interest(s). For instance, I'm working with a child who has autism. Let's say this child is obsessed with trains. His teacher gave him an assignment where he has to retell a story's events in order. This student struggles with reading and story sequencing, and is not looking forward to our session. What I would do is incorporate the child's love for trains into the story by changing the main characters of the story to the characters in the TV show Thomas the Tank Engine. That way, the child would be more eager to retell a story about trains and most importantly work on the skills he struggles with in reading.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Ask questions and seek clarification.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Focus on what the student can do rather than what the student cannot do.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
By integrating practice problems and quizzes into our sessions. Also, checking with parents and families about how the child has been doing in school.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By making each tutoring session suitable to fit the individual needs of each of my students.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Plain paper, notebook paper, small books/guidelines on grammar usage and citations, handouts from my courses in college to use as a reference, pencils, markers, erasers, colored pens, and a laptop.
