I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I think that setting up a study schedule is one of the best ways to start learning independently.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Practice makes perfect, but don't burn out! (Try to make it fun.)

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first session is like a first date. You need to get to know each other. I would start with just conversational basics and then move on to setting goals and expectations. Next, I would provide a diagnostic quiz to assess the student's level of understanding, and then I would ask what type of teaching method is the most compatible for the student.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Take a breather. Approach the concept in a different way. Try to make it applicable to the student's life. (I need to know which subject to answer this question more specifically!)

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Try different strategies. Break down the passage until you find its bare skeleton. Get rid of the fluff!
