What is your teaching philosophy?

If the student doesn't understand one way, try another... there's always a way.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I'd ask them exactly what their difficulty is. After finding out what it is that they do not know, I would try to explain the concept so that they may answer the question on their own.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Based on the subject, I'd have to teach them how to identify when they have a problem and what resources are available online to help them learn on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Encouraging the student in a positive manner and allowing them to derive their own answers usually maintains a student’s drive to continue on.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

After identifying exactly what the problem is, I would attempt to relate the concept to something else that the student is familiar with.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I re-word the point of the essay into words they may understand.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The most important strategy is to listen to the student and see where the problem is. Then relate the problem/solution back to them in a way they can understand.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would ask them to step back and look at the big picture. Oftentimes, students get stuck on details, which there are many. If they first focus on the big concept, and then relate it to something they already know, their enthusiasm will grow.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would constantly be asking the student questions to which I already know the answer, to make sure they are following the correct thought process.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Asking them questions they know the answer to. As their knowledge grows, increase the difficulty of your questions to match their skills.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

First understand what their goals are and what time frame we have. Then after working with them, I'd have an understanding of how their mind works.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

As different students have different methods of learning, I would first explore how they have processed the information they have already learned. Then I would teach information to support their own method of internalizing the information.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Several online resources including YouTube. I have several textbooks that I refer to myself.
