Certified Tutor

Working as a teacher and tutor has been my goal since childhood. Following in my mother's footsteps, I began working with children at a young age and have not stopped since. I attended Eastern Connecticut State University and received a Bachelor's in English along with a Secondary teaching certificate. I then went to George Mason University and received my Master's in Linguistics with a TESL certification. I have always loved school, which allows me to instill that joy in my students to get them motivated. I believe in a comfortable and communicative environment for my students to thrive in. A main focus in my ESL teaching philosophy is to allow the transition from my sessions to a new environment, such as their school classroom, as easy as possible. Providing students with comfort in the language, speaking skills, and range of motivating activities will prepare them for this transition. The same idea can be applied with SAT prep. The main focus in my sessions to get students comfortable with taking the test. While your student will work hard and learn a lot, I will never put unnecessary pressure on them. I understand that every student has a different learning style and I will adjust to them to alleviate any pressure they feel.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I ensure all my students feel comfortable and motivated while working with them. I address the specific needs that I find important to the progression of the student's learning.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First, I get to know the student with a relaxed and quick interview. During this I will pay close attention to find the trouble spots for the student and make note to address them in the future.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Instead of giving students answers, I lead them to the answer themselves by questioning and scaffolding.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would make the material interesting or applicable to their life through role-play, games, etc.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would start back at square one to determine the exact spot of difficulty, then, using beginner examples, work our way back up.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Start with small pieces of literature as a jumping point to build the student's confidence. I would also make sure there is no other learning issues happening preventing the student from comprehension.
