I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Foreign languages (mainly Spanish) have been my passion and concentrated study since 2005. I love culture, and I love learning about how people live around the world. I studied abroad in Granada, Spain two separate times for two semesters. I'm also a member of an NGO called Global Learning Exchange that works directly with impoverished and underprivileged schools in Guatemala. I traveled there in 2013 as the Training Specialist where I trained five Guatemalan teachers in their native language on how to perform our reading program.

I have a Bachelor's in Spanish and a Master's in Romance Languages and Literature. I have a proficiency in French from three semesters taken during my graduate program. I use Spanish daily for my career as a Bilingual Home Visitor for KU Medical Center as well. I have dedicated my life to this study, and I would absolutely love to help anyone eager to develop their skills as well!

What is your teaching philosophy?

The best teacher is one that is passionate about their subject and keeps the student engaged with energy, patience and adaptability.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Zero in on the area(s) of highest difficulty for the student, and begin to go over the beginning and/or basic fundamentals of said area(s).

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can teach them different ways to think about language acquisition, and I can suggest alternative ways to learning that do not include a textbook.
