I currently teach 6th grade math in the Bronx. I have been tutoring since I was 16 years old. I have tutored a wide variety of math subject including but no limited to: algebra, geometry, and statistics. For me, the best part is rolling up our sleeves and working through any obstacle. I have been on both sides of the tutoring table, I know what it's like to struggle through the content and I am confident the best way to success is to dedicate time and energy. Identify how each students learns (visual, repetition, step by step)
Identify and practice missing prerequisite knowledge
Provide appropriate support and practice for mastery and confidence
Based on my experience in tutoring and teaching, the best way to learn something is to be allowed to ask any questions on anything and work through it with one on one attention. I have seen what 10 minutes minutes of one on one instruction can do in terms of clearing up any misconceptions in my class.
I graduated from SUNY College at Brockport in 2012 with a BS in Finance and minor in Economics. Currently I am enrolled in a Master's program to obtain my teaching credentials in 2016. My favorite subjects to tutor are algebra and calculus because the concepts can be applied to just about anything. Good skills in algebra lead to great skills in calculus where it gets fun to model and apply. In my free time, I like to watch and play soccer,basketball,flag football and swim.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is to adjust to students' learning styles. I have seen that everybody learns differently and in different time frames. What is constant is that the time and attention paid to each and every student is what ensures success and confidence.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
The typical first session would be where there would be a lot of assessing of present and missing student skills. Also, we would talk about the plan to get the student on the right track and confident about their ability.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
To help a student become an independent learner, I will instill 1.Confidence in one's abilities. 2.Curiosity of how everything works.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would provide incentives for overcoming carefully planned assessments that measure mastery of the subject. For example if a student shows improvement in mastery from 40% to 80%, I would offer a prize and so on to show the value of their hard work.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would try to model using 3-dimensional objects, if I could, and have the student work with me.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would provide them with the skill of writing good notes and identifying all the important details.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
The strategies I have found to be useful are applying the content to real life and making students participate in the modeling part as a part of inquiry-based learning.
