I have always loved to learn. It is something that I find thrilling and satisfying. I have been tutoring for almost ten years now. I have worked with students ranging in age, skill level, and grade. Tutoring became a huge part of my life when I started college. I was asked to be a Supplemental Instructor by my cellular biology teacher. He loved my passion for science and my attitude toward others. I fell in love with the having my own students who came to me for clarification. I discovered that I have an innate ability to explain subject matter and to target where a student is confused.
I am usually contracted as a math tutor. I struggled with math as a young child and up into my teen years. Although I struggled, I worked hard to understand the subject and that is the key factor that I attribute to my skill as a math tutor. Math was not something that came easily, therefore I can relate to my students who come to me bewildered by the foreign language of math. I am able to predict where students will have difficulty based upon my own recollection of where a subject was difficult for me.
The other subjects I tutor are ones in which I feel confident and pertain to my goal to become a professor of science with a PhD in marine biology. My passion for science has provided me with an extended background of knowledge in biology and chemistry. These subjects are ones that I am excited to share with students. I become animated when explaining science and make the learning process fun for the student while I get them involved in absorbing the material.
My ultimate goal in life is to be a teacher and tutoring is a way to build my teaching skills.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy on teaching is based upon the idea that the student comes first. My goal is to become a mentor to the student and to be seen as a resource, not a burden. I find it beneficial to get to know the student's strengths and weaknesses in not only the subject at hand but other subjects as well. This allows me to use the student's skills to his or her advantage when forced to focus on a subject that at first may seem to be impossible. I believe that the student should be allowed to work at his or her own pace and in a conducive work environment because with proper guidance the student's learning will come naturally. I also believe in the cliché saying that learning should be fun, and that is because it is! I make it a goal to have a good time during my sessions, and I want my students to feel the same. I try to include campy jokes or puns when appropriate to keep a light mood. I believe that with a smile and a passion for teaching, I can make a difference.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During a first meeting, I like to get to know my students and let them get to know me. I want them to feel comfortable around me. By telling them about my background and interests, I become a person to them and not just a foreign entity with whom they are forced to associate. I also like to ask a student to show me examples of past work and point out where they struggled with the subject at hand, but I also ask where they excel. It is also key for me to learn what type of learner the student is so that I can use that mode most often to help the student gain the most knowledge.
