Certified Tutor

I am currently a junior studying chemical engineering at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. Although I am not working towards an education degree, I enjoy helping fellow classmates and tutoring students in subjects where they may not feel confident in. I have the most experience in tutoring middle schoolers, and comfortable with high schoolers as well. In college, I volunteer from time to time to work with high school students who come to our organization to ask for help. Additionally, I am the oldest child in my family. I am used to helping my younger sister and brother who are two to three years younger than me with their homework. The subjects I mainly tutor in is mathematics and science. For math, I enjoy tutoring middle school math, different levels of algebra, and pre-calculus to differential calculus. For science, I can help in chemistry and physics. My favorite subject to tutor is algebra because I find it to be very logical and programs are very systematic. I am a visual learner myself, so I tend to use as much graphics tools as needed for the student. I also am very straightforward with my teaching style, especially in mathematics. However, I always ask my students how they learn things in school and am open to help them understand it in a way they would remember the material.

Outside of the academia, I enjoy being outdoors and playing sports, like ultimate frisbee. I ran cross-country in high school, and continue to run long distance today as a hobby. Additionally, I like to hang out with friends, whether its shopping, watching movies, or just chatting.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to be patient with the students, and allow the students to find ways for themselves to understand the concepts taught. It takes a different amount of time for different students to process certain information. The best way is to be patient and guide them along the way until they understand.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

A typical first session with a student would be a normal talk with the student to gauge what level of understanding they have in the certain subject, see what they are confused with, and determine what kind of activities and guidance I can provide to help them learn better and advance.
