I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

I love learning and being involved in the learning process. The most rewarding moment, for me, is helping create that "aha!" moment for my students.

I have been tutoring students of all ages in languages - French, German, Latin, and Spanish, among others - and the social sciences - including sociology, psychology, and linguistics - for more than 8 years. This includes children of 7 all the way up to professionals in their 50s and 60s. It's never too late to start learning a new language!

I graduated with my MA in Linguistics in May 2015, and received my BA in French and Sociology in May 2011 with a minor in German.

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to show my students how speaking foreign languages, learning about the social sciences, and reading can be both fun and relevant to everyday life, and learn how to improve their skills in these areas.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would go over what the student has learned in this area so far, and what s/he is hoping to get out of tutoring. Before starting tutoring, I find that it's important to establish goals, so we can check our progress along the way.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Techniques can vary depending on what type of learner the student is: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or something else completely. Normally I try to explain examples from the material, then ask the student to go through the material and try to explain how they would tackle the problems or material him/herself. This technique is a combination of all three kinds of learning.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The materials I use depend on the subject, and what the student brings to the table (literally). I have suggested books, apps, and websites for language learning and GRE studies, but it's up to the student whether or not s/he wants to add resources onto his or her own materials.
