Tutoring review by Amrutha in Keyport, NJ
We reviewed a bundle of worksheets the students were provided at school - all covering various transformations of graphs (rotations, reflections and transitions). Most of the session was organized in a way that we worked together on a problem from each section, and they would go on to complete others on their own. I explained the reasoning behind the rotation rules so that they could easily memorize the rules before the exam for this section.

I am so proud of the student! Today's session went amazing. She hardly made any errors, and she really has a strong grasp on the concepts of radicals and exponents. It seems as though she's been really paying attention in class or doing her homework very diligently because I hardly had to explain anything to her at all! We went through the study guide and went through all the "steps" involved in multiplying monomials and simplifying radicals, and then I gave her some practice problems to do. I encouraged her to check her work tomorrow on the test (especially for the problems that look tricky and complicated! Those have the most room for error) and mentioned some common mistakes that students make with these problems. Again, she did an awesome job today, and I have no doubt she'll ace the test!

I had a great first session with the student! We covered trigonometry concepts, specifically identifying the amplitude, period, phase shift, and vertical shift of various graphs, and writing out equations of graphs. We began the session by reviewing a few concepts associated with the subject we were discussing, but spent the majority of our session reviewing practice problems. He progressed very quickly throughout our meeting and seemed very confident with the material by the end. He is a very motivated and hard-working student. Through practicing problems and being committed to learning, he will continue to improve very quickly. I'm looking forward to seeing his progress in our future sessions!

Tutoring review by Melissa in Keyport, NJ
The student had four pages of vocabulary homework and two pages of math. She zipped through the vocab quickly -- I had to guide her through one of the questions, but she has always been good with reading and writing, so I wasn't surprised that she didn't have any major struggles. The math was easy, for the most part, but two of the questions were really hard! The student said her class only started learning about algebra a couple of days ago, and one of the problems was pretty advanced, all things considered. We got through both problems, but these required considerably more "nudges" on my part. I do want to help her understand percentages sooner rather than later, because I think this topic is easier than she realizes.

We finished up the reading section today. The student excelled at the humanities passage, but was less sure about the natural science passage. She needs to "check in" with herself often when she is reading silently to make sure that she is still mentally paying attention. We spent the end of the session working on the science section. We will spend the entirety of the next session working on science since that is her biggest concern.

We reviewed for the student's test tomorrow by going over his study guide. I am so proud of his improvements - I can tell he is getting a better understanding of the concepts separately. He has a tendency to not simplify completely - he suggested that as soon as he gets his test, he will write on the top to remember to simplify. This was a breakthrough suggestion to me. He can do the work, he just needs to make sure he takes his time and go back to the basics if he gets caught up and lost. He will do just fine - I have the utmost faith in him.
