The student and I focused mainly on the verbal reasoning portion of the test. We focused on strategies for the sentence completion section to improve her accuracy on that section. We spent a bit of time on math, where she performed very well. Finally, we practiced some reading comprehension questions and discussed ways to find answers within the text.

The student and I reviewed his previous work in the class. I was able to assess his current skills in the subject areas and provide some suggestions for organizing his work and ideas. Study skills were a part of his lesson in science. Going forward, it seems that honing in on the specifics of concepts and being able to put those ideas into words is a good goal to achieve. He has a great attitude and can concentrate for extended periods of time.

This session we focused once again on the student's homework and that led naturally into a discussion of independent vs dependent clauses. We talked a lot about the difference between dependent clauses and sentence fragments as well. She seemed to grasp the concepts we discussed.

The student and I worked on reviewing the subjunctive tense in Spanish for her upcoming quiz. We looked at her homework for tomorrow involving the subjunctive, as well as looked at a list of verbs and phrases that she needs to know for the quiz, while practicing them in writing and orally. We also looked at the preterite and imperfect tenses in Spanish, since she feels she needs more practice with those. We did a general practice of those tenses, and talked about how we'll structure next week's session to devote an entire hour to practicing the preterite and imperfect tenses, while expanding her vocabulary in Spanish (mainly through storytelling). We'll each come prepared to session with stories from our week to tell each other, being mindful of the verb tenses we want to practice, and taking note of the new words we learn along the way.

The student had read her book for homework and was ready to write a book report on a non-fiction book. After I guided her through the first sentence, she was able to do three more sentences alone about information she learned from the book.
