Tutoring review by Alexandra in Sperry, OK
The student and I continued to work through her 5th grade math concepts, which include applying PEMDAS (order of operations) appropriately, long division, and use of negative numbers. We went through her last test. I noticed that she had a little bit of difficulty when subtracting whole number/fraction combinations (for example 2 and 3/4 minus 5/8) and so we spent much of our session practicing and recognizing that whole numbers can be written as fractions too! This led to practice with turning fractions into division problems. She is more than capable of accomplishing the math, but had a little trouble understanding the rationale behind turning fractions into division equations. I presented fractions as a sort of word equation where the fraction line means "divided by." She liked this strategy and subsequently found translating fractions into division problems much easier. Additionally, we worked on problems that she encountered while reviewing for her assessment test. Currently, I am working to compile a list of practice problems for this exam which I will forward onto her and her parents this evening.

We specifically covered graphing, a little bit of science concepts having to do with the changes in states of matter, and we wrapped up with some basic algebra concepts "solving for x." We ended up reviewing a lot of her old work. My strategies including taking problems apart piece by piece to see what they were asking for, and for algebraic equations, using her times tables, and working backwards. I left her with a few algebraic equations, but I will leave her with more this next session on Wednesday. There was a big win from the session in that she really got the hang of those basic algebraic equations, as mentioned before, and working backwards with her times tables.

The student is still on break, so we went over math and writing exercises together for when he returns back to school. We began the session by working in his math workbook for the first 30 minutes. It covered adding and subtracting fractions, rounding, multiplying three-digit numbers, and long division. He mostly did excellent with the material, but had to review subtracting long numbers. To help with this, I wrote 4-5 problems and guided him as he solved them until he was able to do it on his own. We also worked through 3 pages in his writing packet, which reviewed writing topic sentences and the rules for using commas. He needed a little guidance at first, but did it on his own by the end.

We reviewed his first two tests to refresh all concepts. We also reviewed deriving integrals. We discussed what concavity means and discussed how to find it. The student is struggling less and less. There are just a few minor gaps in his knowledge, but we're filling them quickly. His attitude is more comfortable and more confident. I left him with additional practice problems to further solidify these concepts.

The student I reviewed her assignment on proof of line segments and angles. She is easily understanding the concepts and doing very well on her tests and quizzes.
