Tutoring review by Gary in Tennessee
We began by looking at the school site. There was a writing assignment due next week for English that is to be completed in class. The student showed me what she had completed so far. She is in the early stages yet. We reviewed her notes from Science class, as she is having a quiz later this week. The notes were very good, and she showed a good understanding of the muscular system. She showed me an example of what she has been working on in History in a YouTube video. She explained how her group of three created a video on western agricultural expansion. She did a lot of the drawing required. We ended the session with her explaining how she is multiplying and dividing with exponents in Math class.

We covered review questions for the final exam coming up in about a week. We covered stoichiometry, limiting reactants, empirical formulas, bonding, Lewis Dot Structures and VSEPR theory, intermolecular forces and attraction between compounds, redox reactions, thermochemistry, and precipitation reactions along with the solubility rules. I recommended the student revisit, specifically, a few more limiting reactant problems, recommit to memory the solubility rules, and practice a couple more empirical formula problems. All other topics seemed to come back to him readily.

We reviewed word problems involving linear equations and systems of two equations with two variables and applying the slope concept and the point slope formula to get equations of lines. The student has a remarkable will to understand the concepts and applies herself toward catching up with the material. Despite a very busy agenda, she tries her best to study, struggling at times with setting word problems into statements and equations. But the skills are obvious and progress is expected soon.

The student and I did a review of "ser" vs. "estar" in prep for her next class session. She then did practice questions and example sentences. She also took an online quiz to check her understanding. Next week, we are going to do a catch phrase style review of her new vocab.

The student and I focused only on geometry this session for her test tomorrow. She completed the review packet; topics included parallel lines with transversals, congruent angles, sum of interior angles of triangles and the sum of opposite interior angles equaling the exterior angles of a triangle. Application of these concepts included algebraic solutions to solve for unknown angles. She seems to have a good understanding of these concepts.

Today we worked on a few more of the problems that the student had for his calc 2 class. A lot of his integral problems had to do with analyzing the word problems and solving them based on our analysis which is where he sometimes finds it difficult. We did another word problem involving calculating the work from pumping fluid out of a tank, and he was able to follow along easily.
