The student and I finished up her second hormone packet. We went over the pathway that insulin takes to lower our blood sugar and we contrasted this against the pathway that glucagon takes to raise our blood sugar when we fast. We also discussed how our body detects the presence of insulin and the transporters that get inserted into the plasma membrane of body cells. We touched on the posterior pituitary and the two hormones it produces as well as the role of oxytocin and prolactin in milk production and ejection in the female body. We began her first neuro packet and spent some time discussing the big idea behind how chemical gradients across a membrane relate to neural function. We discussed how ion channels distinguish between which types of molecules it will allow through as well.

The student prepared an outline for the essay-writing final tomorrow, as well as a full introduction and conclusion. He wrote extremely polished versions of both that he will study for the in-class essay. We talked a little bit about the body of the essay, but focused our time on developing a strong thesis statement and conclusion. It is an in-class essay, so I'm hopeful that it will be a good start for the new year.
