In our first session, we covered the quadratic formula - what it is, the different ways to solve for it, and also the practical application. The majority of our time was spent working on his homework problems. The student needs to practice his organization of the problems and be careful on making simple calculation mistakes. It would also be helpful if he could double check his answers using the calculator. I'm sure with practice he will succeed.

The student and I followed our routine to develop automaticity of her multiplication facts. We started with our flashcards, then completed a division worksheet (2 digits by 1 digit). I am pleased to see her comfort and confidence level increasing with multiplication and division. After a second worksheet, we played the card game, War, which we modified to drill on multiplication facts.

Today we reviewed percentage discounts in different situations. The student did great in almost all of them; he achieved 18 out of 20. We still need to work in tuning his reading skills, but overall he did great on his calculations.

The student and I reviewed the concepts that will be on his placement test: operations with polynomials, factoring polynomials, solving quadratic equations, simplifying radicals, simplifying logarithms and exponents, function notation, composition of functions, operations with complex numbers, rational expressions, and applying the Pythagorean theorem. He did great and is still enthusiastic to learn the material. We will continue to practice problems so that when he sees them on his placement test he will be confident and comfortable with the material. I left him with a worksheet that focuses on logarithms and exponents as well as a worksheet for operations and compositions of functions. He is free to contact me with any questions concerning these worksheets.

Today the student and I went over new course material that the teacher had covered. She completed the assigned homework in addition to working on the problems from the chapter to make sure she knows how to approach the problem. I was very happy when I found out that she had gotten an A on her quiz! Today was a great session!
