Tutoring review by Kory in Huntley, IL
Reviewed for the test today. The student seems to have a good grasp on the trigonometry definitions, but seemed to have some trouble applying them to word problems. The most prevalent problem was the conversion of English to math language. After the student got the general picture, she was able to figure out the answer with little trouble. One type of question in particular caused the most trouble, interior triangles and finding the angle of elevation. After the student got the picture drawn, there was little trouble, but she needs to watch out for the wording in the problem. Keep up the great work! Good luck on your test!

The student and I went over his homework for this evening.  He seems to have a very good understanding of the trigonometric functions and knows SOH CAH TOA very well.  I have asked him to get some word problems from his teacher so that we can work on interpreting a problem into a diagram.

This covers two 45-minute sessions on 11/28 and 11/30.  11/28:  The student  and I reviewed his difficult problems from 12.1 thru 12.4, then discussed 12.5 and 12.6 so he could complete those before our tutoring session 11/30.    Chapter 12 is series and sequences, the student's  toughest area. 11/30:  The student  and I reviewed 12.8 on power series, how to prepare for the exam next week, and he has completed the homework thru the first half of 12.6.  He really dislikes power series, but seemed to pick them up quite well.  His goal for Monday's session is to have started 12.9 and finish everything prior.

The student has terms and topics in a list that his teacher gave to him that the class covered last semester.  We are starting with those subjects, as he says that his issue is with not knowing the old material.  Using the textbook we covered what the teacher wanted him to know about the Revolutionary War.  I would read the text out loud while we looked at it and then explain in better detail what the text meant, trying to give him context for the terms and idea of the situation and struggle overall.  He took notes on dates and terms.  We talked about the idea of constructing a timeline for him to keep everything in order.

We spent the entire session on a history assignment in which he is to play a West Georgian farmer who will participate in a constitutional convention regarding the ratification of the Constitution in 1787. Discussed the issues  the farmer should consider raising at the Constitutional convention based on his economic, security and political interests. Posed many questions to the student to stimulate him to think deeply about the POV of the farmer.

The student is working on memorizing multiplication tables. He's perfectly capable of doing 5's and 6's already. I quizzed him on the numbers he's learned so far, and he's going to try to beat a 1:30 time with 20 problems. Once he's memorized multiples, I'll start working with him on division. We also went over his exam and there were a few key vocabulary words he didn't understand that led to him missing some of the questions.
