Tutoring review by John in Haltom City, TX
The student's next section is about factoring polynomials. The beginning of the chapter works on definitions regarding the degree of a function (the leading exponent) and what the shape of the graph will be, how many times it might cross the x-axis, where its maximum or minimum or relative max and min might be. We went beyond this because he is good at factoring trinomials. I wanted to give him an overview of the chapter. We touched on forms to be aware of in factoring, such as difference of squares or cubes and factoring out parts of an equation as a tactic to make a simpler trinomial in order to factor further. Then I went on to show him synthetic division and regular long division of polynomials.

Both the girls had finished and submitted their homework, so we spent the session working on individually challenging concepts. Both students were given some harder problems involving missing angles and multi-step equations. They needed some guidance with the combination problems, but by the end were able to do them on their own. Student 1 requested some conceptual scatter plot problems so we worked through an online worksheet. I felt Student 2 needed to practice more mutli-step equations, so I gave her the same challenging problems Student 1 worked through last session. She was able to do so with minimal guidance.

During today's session, I worked with both Student 1 and Student 2. Student 1 and I had a quick review in anticipation of an upcoming exam. We reviewed commands with verbs and the usage of pronouns in commands. We covered the basics and completed 12 practice problems successfully. Student 2 and I also prepared for an upcoming assessment by reviewing exponents and logarithms. We reviewed the general form and laws/properties of each. Using his textbook, we proceeded to complete about 20 practice problems successfully. I left both with my notes.

Tutoring review by Chandler in Haltom City, TX
We began the student's final chapter of the year. The chapter is on estimating the slope of a line of regression for a population given a sample of paired data. Since this is functionally very similar to finding a confidence interval for any parameter, we took the opportunity to review just that. Then we reviewed the conceptual basis of regression and talked about some vocabulary, like what beta represents in these cases.

The student and I started reviewing for her test on conic sections. She had a review packet from her teacher, and we looked at her past quizzes. We started by working with parabolas. I supplemented the problems she had with other review problems. She did well with parabolas, circles, ellipses, and hyperbolas. She knew all the formulas. We also went over a word problem that she needed help with. Once she started using the information to sketch out a diagram, she was easily able to solve it.

I assisted the student with his geometry review, which consisted of nearly 100 questions. We went over trigonometric ratios, parts of circles, triangle similarity, etc. He did rather well after I refreshed his memory on how to solve certain kinds of problems; he said after the session was done that he feels as though after meeting with me a few more times that he will definitely be ready for the test.
