Topics included a Singapore bar model problem involving proportions, finding a pattern in the sum of the digits of all the counting numbers in a given range, the number of degrees between the hands of a clock at a given time, a probability calculation combined with visualizing cube that has been divided into 64 smaller cubes, and a combinatorics problem.

We reviewed exponents, logarithms, and conic sections in preparation for his upcoming final exam. The student seemed to get most of the material. I left him with some pointers on test taking, tips on formulas to remember, and general good wishes on his exam.

The student was continuing to review for his final exam. For this session, we focused mostly on graphing. We worked on graphing linear functions, linear inequalities, and quadratic functions. Again, he was a little rusty, but picked it back up quickly. I think he is in very good shape for his final.

The student completed her homework on solving equations using the quadratic formula. Her only question was on what to do when the art under the radical is negative. I explained to her that the problem had no solution.

On Sunday, the student and I focused on electric fields, which I initially detected to be a weak area for him, in preparation for his midterm exam today. He was focused and on the ball and seemed to have a firm grasp on the topic by the close of our session. I gave him a few follow-up problems from his textbook to practice to solidify his new learning.

The student and I began reading his book "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry." We went over ways for him to take notes as he reads the book so that his book report will be easier to write. I taught him how to write character analyses for each major character and how to recognize themes for each group of paragraphs. We also created notes, and I showed him different strategies he could use to annotate his work in his book. I informed him that we will look back over his book on Monday, and I'll go over his notes with him to make sure he continued to take notes and understood how to do them in a way that is easy for him to understand. I will also look over his vocabulary sheet to make sure he has been adding new words that he does not know from his readings. I believe this is a great way to improve his vocabulary and reading comprehension skills.
