We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

The student and I worked on the rest of her chapter 8 assignments, a take home quiz in preparation for her test next week. She has the material down fairly solidly (surface areas of rectangular and triangular prisms, volume of rectangular prisms). We also spent some time brainstorming for her literary assignment on the Divergent book and exploring the faction system as a possible catalyst for conflict in the book.

Our session yesterday seemed to go very well. We were able to review the material for the student's upcoming test, and then we were also able to get a head start on the upcoming chapter, which introduces derivatives. The student's test focuses on limits and on the definition of continuity. These ideas seem simple at first, but they are very abstract and require a lot of practice to fully understand.

The student has a Module 7 quiz this week, so we worked on the module 7 review sheet. After that, we finished her extra credit for 7.4 graphing inequalities. We also worked on her homework for later in the week on 8.1 causation and correlation. She is doing well!

Tutoring review by Andrew in Lynwood, CA
Tonight, the student and I reviewed some practice math problems she worked on over the Thanksgiving holiday. She did really well with the properties of exponents, but she was struggling with problems involving negative numbers. We discussed easy ways to solve these types of problems, including converting negative numbers to positive when they are being subtracted. I also wanted to gauge her prior knowledge of geometry through a lesson on the essential concepts. Based on our discussion, she has a pretty firm grasp of angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals so I will work with her on some geometry problems the next session.
