Middle School Math Tutoring FAQ
Middle school math teaches students the basic skills required to understand the algebra and geometry taught at the high school level. If your child seems to be falling behind now, the problem will only get worse with time. The best way to address any learning challenges is to contact Varsity Tutors, a company that specializes in connecting students and their parents with qualified middle school mathematics tutors who can help your child work toward their academic goals.
Here are some of the concepts that may be reviewed during middle school math tutoring sessions:
The Number System
Ratios/Proportional Relationships
Geometry
Expressions and Equations
Statistics
Probability
Test Prep
Middle school math tutoring sessions allow students to optimize study time by concentrating on their individual areas of weakness. For instance, a student who completely understands expressions and equations probably doesn't need to invest much study time in those topics. If that same student struggles with geometry, their tutor can focus on that topic instead.
Middle school mathematics tutoring also allows students to work in a one-on-one learning environment and establish a real connection with their tutor. This offers several advantages, including allowing a tutor to incorporate their pupil's interests into lessons to make them more interesting. For example, sports scores can be a great way to generate practice problems for a sports fan, while a student interested in architecture might be more interested in geometry.
National Common Core standards require students to pass an annual math assessment each year through Grade 8. If your child is a little apprehensive about the test, their middle school mathematics tutor may administer timed practice exams to give them an idea of what they can expect on test day. Dedicated review sessions can also zone in on your child's weaknesses to potentially make them more confident on test day. Finally, a knowledgeable tutor may be able to share test-taking strategies that your child can fall back on if they are unsure of an answer.

Recent Middle School Math Tutoring Session Notes
The student has a quiz coming on Thursday, so we prepped after he completed his homework. We went over graphing points, finding the area of triangles and other shapes, as well as finding the measurements to those figures when given the area.
Today was my first session with the student, so I really just got to know her mathematically, how she works, and processes information. We started with basic computation of all four areas, and quickly was able to see she is like many students and goes through the steps, but without thinking. So goals for summer are to get her to release anxiety related to math, and see it's just a way of thinking. Today we practiced a different way of dividing, mental math, estimating, pairing computation with real world problems to make it make sense, place value, and a little conversions between decimals, fractions, and percents. Great start!
The student and I began our first session by breaking the ice, and getting to know each other. I asked about his past experiences in math classes. He said that he felt very comfortable with geometry and algebra, but needed to review specific topics that were problematic. We corrected the last math test that he had from the school year, and then looked at the summer packet that he has to complete before he returns to school. With the packet, we outlined a schedule of different items to complete before the end of the summer, so that he could be finished by the time that school begins. I look forward to meeting with him again!
This was our first tutoring session. I had the student do an overview of basic 7th grade math skills so that I could judge where he was at. We briefly covered order of operations, single variable equations, mean, median, mode, range, ordered pairs and slope, fractions, scientific notation, and exponents. He seemed comfortable with what we went over, so now it is a matter of reviewing more concepts and then using all of these skills to build up to more complex ideas.
Today we mostly focused on 3D geometry. We worked some on the volume of composite figures. We also worked on volumes of pyramids, cones, and spheres, as well as trying to visualize cross sections and the translation of flat figures to become 3 dimensional.
Went over hw on dividing and multiplying fractions by finding the greatest common factor. She did very well on the homework, very successful. Introduced how to find percentages of given amounts in a group of numbers.
