The student and I worked on his packet of math problems. We covered factoring quadratic equations, distributing numbers, simplifying expressions, and graphing a quadratic equation. He has some trouble factoring quadratic equations, but when I explain things to him, he seems to understand and is able to work more independently.

As the student gets back into the swing of sessions, she becomes more focused and productive. We were able to cover more ground: introducing the last wave of new vocab words to be worked in with those she forgot, and recognizing geometric series patterns and order of operations. As we review the vocabulary, she remembers what was forgotten much faster than she learned it the first time.

Defined mean, variance, standard deviation, standard normal, pdf, pmf, cdf, cmf, confidence interval. Contrasted discrete and continuous data types. Derived probabilities of compound dichotomous events. Simplified fractions containing factorials. Expressed arithmetic and logical series in summation notation.

The student also has a final in two weeks. His new grammar points are the present perfect, which he understands well but sometimes confuses he/ha verb forms, and indirect object pronouns. He seems to be doing great at placing the indirect object pronouns before the verb, where they belong. Retaining vocabulary seems a little harder for him, though he was correctly use all the terms in sentences once he remembers the words. We practiced the vocab on his homework as well as out loud, and went over the words that look most similar to each other, so they wouldn't be as confusing.

We covered advanced algebra techniques and covered some of the most difficult types of problems related to algebra on the GRE. The student was grasping the concepts quite well; she only made a few mistakes from rushing through problems. I told her she could work on some more algebra practice problems if she likes. We plan on meeting again tomorrow morning to cover geometry. We are meeting 4 times this week.

The student and I focused tonight's session on a review of sets/ groups problems and the introductory number theory/ advanced arithmetic review. Next session we can either continue NT or turn back to the tail end of CR.
