Members-Only Event: Play Chess With An International Champion
Grades 3-7
Play chess with an international champion! In this exclusive event, free for Varsity Tutors Learning Members, young players will team up with Nemo Qiyu Zhou–a current national champion and former world youth champion–to analyze positions and decide on next moves against a formidable computer opponent. In doing so, students will chat directly with Nemo to share their thought processes and learn just how a renowned chess champion sees the board and plans her next move.
Here’s how it works:
•Registered members can join Nemo for this exclusive small-group event from 6:40 to 7:00pm Eastern Time.
•From 7:00 to 7:45pm Eastern Time, Nemo is teaching a large-group StarCourse lesson called Chess Lessons from the Immortal Game. Members are invited to attend that lesson, too.
•Then from 7:45 to 8:00pm, Nemo will facilitate a members-only, small group wrap-up discussion to talk about highlights from the previous hour.
•Once members have registered, they’ll use the same link for the entire sequence of events.
Meet your expert instructor, Nemo
A former youth world chess champion and current holder of the titles Woman Grandmaster and FIDE Master, Qiyu “Nemo” Zhou started her chess journey at age 3 when she saw a friendly-looking chess piece in a storefront window. In the years since, she’s won tournaments all over the world, been a five-time Finnish national youth champion, and won the Canadian national championship. She owns one of the fastest growing live stream channels on Twitch and contributes strategy videos for Chess.com, all while pursuing a double-major at the University of Toronto and spreading her love—and mastery—of chess across the globe.
