Special Education Reading Comprehension Level 4
Grades 7-9
This class is intended for students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) with goals targeted at improving reading comprehension.
Level 4 is a group of students currently in the 7th through 9th grade who are reading at a 4th grade level working together towards similar goals. This is the right class for students with a Lexile Level of 740-875.
Reading comprehension strategies include using visuals, answering questions about the reading content, predicting future events in the story, summarizing and retelling stories, identifying parts of the story, and making connections.
This class may be taken multiple times until the IEP goals are met.
What You Will Learn

Creating visuals in order to improve recall. Types of visuals include graphic organizers, venn diagrams, story maps and storyboards, and creating visuals in the mind.

Answering questions about what was just read. This will give students a purpose for reading and encourage them to think actively as they read.

Predicting what happens next based on the story title, illustrations and other clues.

Retelling a story in order to learn what the important elements of a story are.

Identify main ideas and characters of the storyline with words or visually.

Build vocabulary and use a dictionary.
