I see a certain magic in helping someone understand something about the world, and I want to experience that magic over and over again. I have had experience working with students at many levels of education, from elementary school through students working on graduate degrees. I have a bachelor's in chemistry from Reed College and a Ph.D. in radiochemistry from the University of Missouri, where I also took a minor in college teaching. I currently tutor elementary, middle school, and high school math and science subjects. Chemistry is my first love, and I enjoy tutoring chemistry and biology because explanations in these fields involve telling a good story about why weirdly different things are actually the same thing. My teaching philosophy is founded on being a good listener: I cannot help you learn something new unless you can tell me what you already know, so I am ready to listen to you. Outside of academia, I'm into woodworking, other arts and crafts, exploring my city, and gardening. I have two children who do a good job of showing me the world through their fresh eyes.

I graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences and and a Master's degree in Education. I have been a teacher for 3 years since then, where I teach Honors Biology and IB Biology HL. I have a true passion for biology overall, and I want to show others how great it can be! While I think the subject is already filled with fun and interesting content, I still try to make it relevant to the student so they have some context to help connect their learning.
I spent four years at the University of Missouri in Columbia majoring in English and History. In the time I spent there, I mostly worked with friends who felt like they needed help writing papers, personal statements, or simple responses for classes, but in my senior year I got the chance to substitute for one of my previous professors. This sparked my interest in tutoring, and the year after I graduated I tutored student athletes at the university in English, History and Mythology classes.I believe that all students are highly capable, they just need the proper tools to gain the confidence to succeed. Some students simply don't have all the information they need to do something well, but this doesn't mean that they are automatically "bad" at reading or writing papers. I try to help students develop the skills they need so that they can move forward with confidence and continue to improve.I have been reading my whole life, and I have done a lot of creative writing, so I have a great love of words. I am particularly fond of Shakespeare (although there are a lot of students who don't agree with me!) but I also have experience reading other European and American literature. My history experiences covers Europe, America, and Latin America, although I have a special fondness for Tudor England (think Henry VIII and his wives), early American history, and classical cultures, like ancient Rome. I think that everybody can develop a love for history, they just need to approach it in the right way!
I am a state certified teacher, and have taught all subjects at the elementary level and middle school science. My educational background includes a Bachelors degree in Social Sciences, and a Masters degree in Education from the University of Missouri (MU).My present goal is to work individually with students to help them excel at their academic work. The courses included teaching students: study techniques, academic planning, professional development, time management, motivation, campus involvement, stress management and other academic related skills. I was also an academic adviser at MU where I counseled students on selecting a major, creating a four-year plan of study and to pursue internships compatible with their career goals. In addition to subject knowledge, I offer an encouraging and supportive plan of action and customized advising approach to my tutoring. I am also interested in working with students to decide which college is right for them and to help with admission essays. In my spare time I enjoy time with my two cats, working out, photography and painting pottery.

I am a University of Missouri - Columbia graduate, and umpire for minor league baseball. I started teaching because I genuinely enjoy math (even though I haven't always) and believe it is important for students to excel in math.
I am a graduate of the University of Missouri at Columbia, where I earned first my Bachelor's and then (some time later) Master's of Science in Mathematics with an emphasis on physics and the theory of computation. The latter degree was a necessary precursor to my next career where my workplace was the classroom: I don't believe in the importance of education because I teach; I became a teacher because I believe in the importance of education. Especially when trying to make informed decisions, as I came to realize in my first career as a data analyst. This I passionately believe; doubly so in matters where a certain fluency in the language of numbers is demanded.
