I graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Social Studies. I am one semester away from finishing my Master's degree in Political Science from the University of Illinois Springfield. I have been teaching high school for five years and LOVE my job and working with students! I have taught AP World History, AP Economics, AP Psychology, United States History, and AP Government and Politics. The best part of my job is working with students individually to help them achieve their academic and personal goals. I received my doctorate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Music Composition with a minor in Musicology (Music History). I am a graduate of the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Law and received my undergraduate Bachelor of Science in History from Kansas State University. Both while at K-State and in law school, I tutored high school and college students in History, Writing, and English Literature. I focus on approaching these topics with a holistic attitude, tying history to the present and reading/writing to applicable life skills. While I still tutor in these subjects (and love working with students in them), I also am passionate about helping students who are planning on entering law school with improving their LSAT performance. I began tutoring college algebra and trigonometry during my sophomore year at Kansas State University because one of my math professors at the time offered that opportunity to several students in her Accelerated Calculus class. I have continued to seek opportunities to teach, and to share what I know, with junior employees, with my nieces and nephews and with my own children.I enjoy teaching language, science, and preparing students for standardized testing, but I think I'm most passionate about teaching math because I believe learning math is helpful in developing brain function, in the same way that going to the gym is helpful to developing physical fitness. Although it requires effort, the process of learning math should involve the beneficial pain that leads to good results rather than the crippling pain that prevents any further progress that too many math students unfortunately experience.Beyond my work as an analyst and a tutor, I enjoy reading and spending time with my kids. In 2011 I graduated from Temple University with a Bachelors of Science in the field of Neuroscience. As an undergraduate, I became really active in research, more specifically; I started investigating the effects nicotine has on learning and memory. By the time I graduated from Temple I had helped publish two peer reviewed journal articles. Both articles were published in the journal of Behavioral Neuroscience. Upon graduation, I was given the opportunity to teach classes on the research process and research ethics to undergraduate students. I also held workshops for these students on how to write a proper resume and personal statement for graduate school. This was only a six-week position but in that time my students conducted research in a laboratory on campus and wrote up their findings in a scientific research paper. At the end of the summer they presented their research at a conference in Atlanta, Georgia. I found it very rewarding to help my students go through this process in such a short period of time. I moved to Portland in 2012 because I was admitted into the Behavioral Neuroscience PhD Program at Oregon Health & Science University. After a year in this program, I realized that I missed working with and mentoring students and I decided to leave the program and pursue a Masters in Academic Advising from Kansas State University. I am currently a few months away from completing my masters degree and I am still living in Portland, Oregon (my degree is being completed online). I am currently working as a classroom assistant for a blind student at Portland State University. I help this student in the classroom and I tutor him outside of the classroom as well. I really enjoy working for the disability resource center and am very passionate about helping ALL students succeed in their academic endeavors. I believe that students all learn differently and what really helps one student learn a concept may confuse a different student. As a tutor, I try to assess how my students learn best and work off of their learning style. I also believe in working off of students' strengths. For instance, if a student struggles with writing argumentative essays, I will start off by giving him or her an essay about a topic they are really passionate about. This way they can see that they can actually like the writing process. Once we establish that they can actually do the task I will ask them to write about something that they are not as familiar with or something that does not interest them as much. I think it is really important to not treat all students the same when it comes to teaching because everyone thinks differently! I have just defended my master's thesis on social behavior in a species of bird called the Golden-winged Manakin (a relative of the "Moonwalking Bird" on YouTube). Through my master's program, I have three years of experience as a teaching assistant. I've taught freshman-level biology and zoology labs and held office hours to help students with population ecology classwork.I think that the best ways to learn new material involve tackling concepts and the connections between them from different angles. A little bit about me. I grew up in Veracruz, Mexico until I was five years old. My family moved to Kansas and enrolled me in Kindergarten two weeks later.
