I graduated from Northeastern University School of Law in May of 2014. Now, as I begin my legal career, I'm eager to encourage and assist students in continuing their education and pursuing their dreams.Before law school, I taught classes and tutored at an after school program in Boston. While there, I developed and standardized curricula for ISEE preparation (6th grade), Mathematics (5th and 6th grades), English (5th and 6th grades), Physics (5th and 6th grades), comic design (5th and 6th grades), and Robotics (grades 5 through 8). I also reviewed homework and skill-built in areas of weakness for students (grades 3 through 12).In 2009, I worked for Huntington Learning Center where I tutored students in preparation for the SAT in Math, Reading, and Writing. Hello! I'm an Iowa native who moved to Nashville for graduate school. My background is in the life sciences; I have a Masters from Vanderbilt in Chemical and Physical Biology, and my undergraduate degree is in Biochemistry. However, my education has been well rounded and I have interests in philosophy, literature, writing, and history. I have extensive research experience, and I hope to share my passion for science with students. I have experience mentoring undergraduate students during my graduate school education to help them gain research experience. I am a very patient teacher and have the ability to see problems from the students perspective; my tutoring style adapts to each student's individual needs, but centers on getting each student to come to their solutions rather than following any one formula for success. I have a lot of experience with standardized testing, and have taken multiple AP subject tests in addition to the ACT, SAT, and GRE examinations.In my free time, I like to play and coach Ultimate Frisbee. I coached the Vanderbilt men's team for three years and am currently leading a club team representing Nashville that travels throughout the southeast to compete. I received a BA with honors in Chemistry from Grinnell College in 2011 and received my PhD in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 2017. I was a student mentor in organic chemistry during my junior and senior years at Grinnell. Then, at UW Madison I was a teaching assistant for general and physical chemistry and taught summer outreach courses for high school students. After finishing my PhD work in December 2016, I served as a visiting faculty member at Cornell College in Mount Vernon Iowa. During the Spring 2017 semester I taught general chemistry, organic chemistry lab and conducted physical chemistry research with a student.When I was growing up I wanted to know the composition of the materials in the world around me and why a given material had particular properties. I found chemistry had the answers to my questions. Now I am inspired by how chemistry can be used to enable green and renewable energy sources. Chemistry allows us to connect the abstract and strange world of atoms and molecules to everyday applications.As a student, my learning was enhanced by constantly asking for clarification and attempting to craft my own explanation. As a tutor, I ask students to explain their thinking so I can find their confusion or misconception. After providing new information and examples I ask students to demonstrate their new understanding with practice problems to make sure my explanations made sense.Outside of chemistry I enjoy playing and following sports. I ran track and cross country in high school and college. I now enjoy playing ultimate frisbee and soccer.
