Personal Statement as an EducatorMy personal philosophy of education is based in life-long learning and a learner-centered approach.I hope to inspire the learner to continue learning throughout their lifespan. Education is empowering and when we feel empowered, inspired and motivated, there is nothing we can't do. A thirst for knowledge can see us through the best and the worst of times. My approach to education has always been learner-centered. It is not about what is taught, but what is learned. Seeing learners as individuals with lives beyond the educational setting is key. With education, we can see hardships as challenges with solutions that are yet to be found.

An educator with a Master's in Secondary Education from St. Thomas University and a Bachelor's in Theater Arts from Carroll University, I bring over 25 years of classroom experience to my role. For the past 15 years I have lived and taught overseas in international schools, specifically; Bangladesh, Zambia, China, and Vietnam. My passion lies in teaching or coaching students in Theatre and the performing arts, English, American History, and World History. I have extensive experience with IB DP Theatre and can assist students with all four assessments. I strive to create a supportive learning environment where each student feels valued and inspired to learn. Drawing from my background in Theater, I employ creative teaching methods that engage students and make learning enjoyable. My goal is to connect with students individually, adapting my approach to their unique needs and interests, ultimately fostering a lifelong love of learning.
I am a physician assistant with a passion for helping people, especially kids. As somebody that struggled with various subjects throughout my academic career, yet still was able to obtain a master's degree, I believe that I can impart skills and techniques that I wish I had.
Even though the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, that does not mean that life always follows this rule. My life is proof of this. In college, I had aspirations of having a career in some capacity in law enforcement. To assist with this, I graduated from college with a double major in Criminal Justice and Sociology. For a few years after that, I used these degrees in the field of criminal justice, but couldn't visualize doing this long-term as a career. At that point, my life course began to bend and arc as I moved to a new state, and found a new job. This job utilized my degrees, but it also included education because I knew that was the career that I wanted to pursue. A few years later I applied to and was hired in a public high school as a Special Education Teacher, teaching several different core classes. This, of course, meant going back to school to get a teaching degree. This new job excited me, but of the different core classes that I taught, one in particular was my favorite to teach: history. Five years later, with some more education, I made the jump from Special Education to Social Studies at the high school level. Fast forward to now and I am a veteran teacher with over 20 years of experience working in the classroom. In my teaching career, I have taught a variety of high school students at all levels, from regular to Advanced Placement (AP). In addition to all of the typical experience of a veteran teacher, I bring some other unique skills to the table. Since 2018, in addition to my traditional face-to-face classes, I have also taught sections of online social studies courses in my district's online virtual academy. Having started this in 2018 gave me an advantage in 2019 as we went into remote learning. As a result, I feel very comfortable teaching remotely. Another opportunity that I have undertaken since 2020 is scoring the AP United States History written responses for College Board in the summers. Doing this has given me valuable insight into how to effectively write in order to earn the most points. As a result, I have passed these insights on to my students, and their scores have gone up significantly on the AP Exam. Finally, as a lifelong learner, I continue to seek out and attend professional development opportunities regularly to learn more content and methodology to help my students.

Education has always been a passion of mine. From my days growing up and playing school with my younger siblings, to running study groups in high school, I never tired of the joys of teaching and learning. It was a natural fit that I pursued a degree in Education and became a licensed teacher. I received my Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin with a minor in English. Since 2011, I have been sharing my love of learning and enriching the mind's of children in grades 4-8. I have taught in a 4th-5th grade multi-age classroom, and as a 7th grade Language Arts teacher. Reading, writing, and analytical thinking are my favorite subjects to tutor and talk about. In my free time, I enjoy reading fiction, playing with my dog Oreo, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers.
I am excited to help elementary and middle school students (online or in person) in the area of reading and writing. Especially those that struggle with reading, as I have worked with not only my own children in this area, but students who have fallen behind or just need that extra ENTHUSIASM with reading! Reading is fundamental to be successful in all subjects!! I feel that by becoming a proficient reader-which means to enjoy, comprehend and analyze, a student can succeed in all subjects. In today's world, with so much information on the internet, we must all know how to comprehend and understand, and discern what we are reading. I want to make reading fun, enjoyable, a world that can be opened up for someone--and a tool for a student's successful school experience and future career path.

Everyone learns differently and I would love to be a stepping stone to help your achieve your goals! Additionally, I am a very organized and caring person that can also assist in many other things like personal organization, planning for education and many other areas as well.
This will be my 13th year teaching high school science and my 3rd year teaching college level chemistry. I have a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry with a minor in Secondary Education and a Masters in Chemical and Life science. I'll admit it I'm a science geek. I love how science both defines and inspires. I love the infinity of space and the quandaries of time. When we are little, we ask "why." But science does not just give us answers to the why's of our childhood; it gives us the tools we need to keep answering them as we grow up. Science is the tool I use to understand the world around me. It provides logic and sense and order in what might otherwise seem chaotic. And though the answer to the why's of my adulthood may sometimes be "we don't know," it's really just "we don't know yet"--the answer will eventually be found, with science. I cannot wait to share my love of science with your child and am looking forward to a fun and productive year helping you understand my favorite subject Science!
