When I was 12, school became very difficult for me. My parents bounced me from tutor to tutor, until I eventually found someone who changed learning from a chore, to a path to discovery. My goal as a tutor is to give every student that same sense of curiosity and satisfaction that made me successful.

I have always been driven by my passion of contributing to positive educational growth. This has led me to pursue various civic engagement opportunities while studying social psychology at Bard College, as well as related social development projects at The New School for Public Engagement where I earned a Master's in Nonprofit Management. During my undergraduate study, I spent two summers in Qingdao, Northern China achieving fluency in Mandarin Chinese and researching early childhood behavior in Chinese preschools (Qingdao University). Subsequently, I spent one semester in Hong Kong engaging in a cross-cultural social psychology exchange program (Lingnan University).I am excited to work with students on subjects of my expertise: English, reading, writing, verbal SATS, regents exams, and Chinese Mandarin. I have served as a tutor to students of all ages, from kindergarten to first-year college students. What makes me a great tutor is my level of commitment and my genuine desire to see my students succeed.

I am an experienced educator with a passion for teaching. I have graduated from Bard College with a BA in Cognitive Psychology. I have 10 years of experience teaching in various settings as well as various age groups ranging from 6 years old to college age students. I was a university professor in South Korea where I taught at the Immersion English Language Institute of the Far East University for 2 years. While there I taught my students English as well as prepared them for a global Workforce. In the past I have used my psychology degree to tutor elementary school students with learning disabilities such as ADD / ADHD and dyslexia. My intervention helped them improve their grades from Ds to A's and B's. Throughout the process I communicate clearly and frequently with the parents. As a university professor in South Korea I taught English to classes of 20 students or more. I developed my own curriculum, wrote my own lesson plans and assessment tools and performed classroom management. While there is no substitute for school I find that learning one-on-one or in small groups can be more effective. I can individualize the lesson plans to the specific needs of my students. And watching those students quickly overcome material that was previously challenging is the greatest satisfaction a teacher can get. In tutoring session I can achieve what I can’t do in a classroom: I can perfectly customize my teaching to the needs of the student. Throughout the process I communicate clearly and frequently with the parents.I try to cultivate in my students a love of learning for the sake of learning. Of course there are always those difficult days when a student is tired or would do anything other than homework. To maintain interest and motivation I keep my lessons fun, interesting and exciting. I convey information in a simple and clear fashion, set learning goals that are within reach and I make sure to praise them when they do reach those goals. Ultimately, the best way to motivate a student is by listening to them and gaining their trust.

I have taught Latin and Greek at Princeton University, University of Miami, University of Michigan and New York University. A great tutor customizes instruction for the particular needs of the student. One must quickly diagnose the main areas the student needs to improve, so as not to waste time. A great tutor can see outside the box and be flexible enough to explain the same concept in a variety of ways, depending on the needs of the student. A tutor must be more personable with the student than a classroom teacher, who to a certain degree, must hide behind a teaching persona. Lastly, in addition to speaking with the utmost clarity, a great tutor must have excellent listening skills.

Currently an ESL night class instructor for adults, I've been tutoring and teaching since 2013, when I graduated from Bard College with a BA in Written Arts and Spanish. A lover of language and literature, I taught English in rural Spain for a year to elementary school students. While in Spain, I also provided private writing and essay-prep classes to students of all ages, including adults. In addition, I have three years of experience as an academic support teacher at a middle/high school in Western Massachusetts. This position entailed helping students with homework in all the subjects, particularly reading, writing (including college essay writing), and Spanish. Although I do enjoy classroom teaching, I love tutoring because working one-on-one with students lets me get to know them personally and tailor lessons to their interests.

Writing, history, literature and film are my passions. I enjoy helping people overcome the obstacles that block them from achieving academic understanding or from expressing their ideas. I take a “results based” approach to tutoring. I aim to know the student, build his or her confidence, and develop strategies and routines that assist a person in becoming an independent learner. I have a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Bard College and a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma. As an English teacher and literacy coach working across all grade levels, I have tutored and coached many types of students, including those who are highly motivated and those who sometimes struggle. I have worked with a wide range of age groups, from college students who were writing research papers or literary essays, all the way to fourth graders who need help breaking the barriers that prevent them from reading effectively. As a writer I have many techniques to assist students in learning to produce topnotch papers in any genre.I am an expert test taker. In 2005, along with other educators, I assisted the New York City Department of Education in developing curriculum to help teachers improve their own students’ test taking strategies. I know the tricks of how to do well when taking standardized tests. As a tutor, I work on establishing a solid base of fundamental test taking techniques.I have many interests outside of teaching and writing. I love nature, gardening and the outdoors; I bicycle and practice yoga; I love baseball; and I love to watch movies and listen to all kinds of music from hip-hop to jazz. I have also taught screenwriting and have directed a program in which students made video documentaries for high school credit.

I earned a BA in Biology from Bard College in 1980. For many years I tried to monetize my interests in art and music, and this led me to a long period of teaching Appalachian style fiddling to kids and adults. In 2016 I got certified to teach math and science in order to work at a residential treatment facility for at-risk youth. In a multi-grade classroom with just a few, very volatile kids, I had the chance to give them the time and the safe learning environment they needed to move forward in school. That school closed down in 2021. In stead of taking a job in the public schools I chose to do tutoring so I could continue to engage directly with individual students. I really enjoy giving my full attention to one child at a time. I listen closely to understand the unique learning style of each student and try to give each child what they need to make that work for them. In the time I've been with Varsity Tutors I've helped kids with math in grades 4 through 11, and several kids with science and other subjects. The kids I meet are never boring and often delightful!

I received a Bachelor of Arts in French Studies from Bard College, after transferring from Middlebury College, where I studied English and Russian. As a high school student, I benefited from one-on-one tutoring when preparing for standardized tests, and in my sessions I aim to promote an inclusive learning environment that is both heuristic and accessible. I tutor students in reading and writing test prep, general essay writing, as well as in all levels of French. I was raised speaking French at home with my mother, and I believe in the power of fluid conversation to reinforce grammatical concepts and facilitate thematic investigation. I am an editing enthusiast, and I love collaborating with students and empowering them to convey meaning in more compelling and polished ways. I feel most proficient when engaging with high school students and the nuanced subject matter they address, but my experience tutoring children at elementary and middle school levels enables me to interact comfortably with students of all ages. I like to adopt a teaching style that deviates from the dynamic of a large classroom setting, and from the often divisive tone of a traditional student-teacher relationship. With my school days still close behind, I hope to establish myself as less of an authority figure and more as an ally on the quest towards self-betterment. I hope to one day work as an editor in trade publishing, and I have been weighing the merits of pursing an MFA in literary translation. I worked as a laborer on a construction crew for years, and I have enjoyed farming both in the United States and abroad in France. I acted in plays and musicals throughout high school and college. I enjoy playing basketball, soccer, and the acoustic guitar. I have dabbled in stand-up comedy. I love movies and television, but their appeal pales in comparison to that of a good book.

Learning is essentially delightful. You only live once! Do you want to understand the world or not! No two people learn the same way; I often learn things indirectly or by accident. As a child I had an embarrassing speech impediment - I couldn't pronounce "r" until I was 13. I had to drink milkshakes through straws everyday to strengthen my jaw muscles, and study diagrams of tongues forming different shapes. Now I speak perfectly. That learning experience taught me both discipline and inventiveness: you have to work hard, but there's no right or wrong way to do anything.I am a playwright, educator, and graduate of Bard College. I work part time as a literary assistant at off-Broadway theater Playwrights Horizons, where I read play submissions and write thoughtful response letters. For three years, I worked as Enrichment Director at a Shakespeare education program at New Pond Farm in Redding, Connecticut. I helped teenaged actors struggle through difficult passages of iambic pentameter in Twelfth Night and Macbeth. The goal was not only to understand but ultimately even enjoy yes, enjoy Shakespeares dense and often bewildering sonnets, comedies, and tragedies. My hobbies including playing ukulele and chess. I am pursuing a career as a playwright, and have shown original work in New York at The Public Theater, Playwrights Horizons, SoHo Rep, and elsewhere. I believe whole-heartedly in the importance of education and the essentially joyful nature of learning. Sharing that with others is a dream job.

I am a graduate from Bard College in upstate New York with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and the written arts. While at Bard, I wrote a psychology thesis on the neuro-correlates of empathy in atypical populations. Currently I am working on a novel, which draws on my scientific research on empathy through the lens of fiction. I am thrilled to be able blend my primary academic interests in such a rewarding fashion! In the past I’ve worked with students of all ages and backgrounds, from assisting immigrant students writing essays in a second language, to teaching creative writing and basic reading skills to students with a diagnosis of Autism, as well as helping strong, motivated students achieve the best work possible in an honors psychology or English classroom. I have an innate love of words, language, and science, and want to instill in students this love of concepts such as analytical essay writing, reading comprehension and analysis, basic and complex psychology concepts. I want to help students understand what methods of learning work best for them as unique individuals so they may utilize their own unique qualities for success. As a strong analytical and creative writer, I am deeply aware of the need to establish a solid grasp of technical concepts before being able to play creatively with words. I’ve had a love of language since I was young, and find it endlessly fascinating that I can create worlds of my own in only a few sentences. Reading and writing have always been the means for me to explore concepts of empathy and human difference, which has then helped me further my study of psychology and interact with the world in a sensitive manner. Through studying psychology, I have developed an understanding of people through a strong grasp of the scientific method. I use this love of people and words to help others find the importance of empathy, potential, and patience, both in my teaching and writing. I deeply believe in the importance of the scientific method, as well the impact of voice through words, and hope to give others the gift of expressing themselves elegantly and powerfully, whether in an academic or personal sense.I work to solve problems through a creative lens, so students can learn that there is not always just one way to work through difficult concepts, but that there is also an art to learning that can be extremely rewarding if you are given the tools to be confident in yourself and your work. It can be extremely difficult for students to thrive academically when they lack confidence in their own abilities, and my goal is to teach them not only the concepts and technical background necessary for good coursework, but also to instill within them a pride of their own accomplishments, as well as a knowledge of their potential to work hard and succeed.

In my experience, it has always been most productive to make sure a certain level of fun is incorporated into every lesson. I also make sure that lessons are dialogue heavy and a two-way street, so to speak.
