When I was 12, school became very difficult for me. My parents bounced me from tutor to tutor, until I eventually found someone who changed learning from a chore, to a path to discovery. My goal as a tutor is to give every student that same sense of curiosity and satisfaction that made me successful.

I am recent graduate of Bard College and the Bard College Conservatory of Music, where I graduated with a B.A. in Political Science and a B.M. in Music Performance. A great tutor customizes instruction for the particular needs of the student. One must quickly diagnose the main areas the student needs to improve, so as not to waste time. I earned a BA in Biology from Bard College in 1980. For many years I tried to monetize my interests in art and music, and this led me to a long period of teaching Appalachian style fiddling to kids and adults. In 2016 I got certified to teach math and science in order to work at a residential treatment facility for at-risk youth. In a multi-grade classroom with just a few, very volatile kids, I had the chance to give them the time and the safe learning environment they needed to move forward in school. That school closed down in 2021. In stead of taking a job in the public schools I chose to do tutoring so I could continue to engage directly with individual students. I really enjoy giving my full attention to one child at a time. I listen closely to understand the unique learning style of each student and try to give each child what they need to make that work for them. Learning is essentially delightful. You only live once! Do you want to understand the world or not! No two people learn the same way; I often learn things indirectly or by accident. As a child I had an embarrassing speech impediment - I couldn't pronounce "r" until I was 13. I had to drink milkshakes through straws everyday to strengthen my jaw muscles, and study diagrams of tongues forming different shapes. Now I speak perfectly. That learning experience taught me both discipline and inventiveness: you have to work hard, but there's no right or wrong way to do anything.I am a playwright, educator, and graduate of Bard College. I work part time as a literary assistant at off-Broadway theater Playwrights Horizons, where I read play submissions and write thoughtful response letters. For three years, I worked as Enrichment Director at a Shakespeare education program at New Pond Farm in Redding, Connecticut. I helped teenaged actors struggle through difficult passages of iambic pentameter in Twelfth Night and Macbeth. The goal was not only to understand but ultimately even enjoy yes, enjoy Shakespeares dense and often bewildering sonnets, comedies, and tragedies.My hobbies including playing ukulele and chess. During my time there, I also studied German Language and Literature, eventually spending time studying at the Humboldt University of Berlin. I was previously involved with the group Culture Connect. This group was an after school program at local elementary schools to help ESL students with completing schoolwork and aid in language comprehension. While I tutor English, German, and Art, I am most passionate about German Literature.
