10+ years of tutoring
Sam
- I graduated from Oberlin College in 2019, with a BA in Theater and a minor in Cognitive Sciences.
- Now that commercial theater is hibernating, I'm focusing on education.
About Me
I have tutored informally for several years, and in 2016-17 I volunteered with the Oberlin Tutoring Practicum, helping struggling kindergarteners develop basic literacy and appropriate classroom behavior. While working in New York City as a theatrical technician, I also worked as the Lighting Director at a high-school drama program, where I mentored students in technical theater and guided them through the lighting design process. I am most passionate about English and literature; I tutor basic literacy, as well as English, reading, writing and literature at all levels. I tutor elementary-level math, science and social studies. I am also a sharp essay-editor, and would be happy to support students in specific projects. I am easy-going and thick-skinned, and I am productive with reluctant/resistant students without being commandeering or condescending. I welcome additional resources from students, parents or classrooms. I'm always willing to try an unconventional approach or change tactics when needed: student success is my main concern.
Hobbies & Interests
I'm a huge reader, and I often juggle two or three books at a time. Technical theater was my profession pre-COVID, and I absolutely love theater – making it, seeing it, or just talking about it. I speak some Spanish (though I'm rusty at the moment), and I recently started learning German.
